Department 90, the Territoire de Belfort, was made from the French-speaking part of southern Alsace in 1871, and Departments 91 to 95, the departments of the Greater Paris area, added in 1964. Department 20, Corsica, was divided into two in 1976. There are also four overseas departments, known as DOM( Départements d'Outre-Mer). 20 Dreyfus
[drɛfys] nom propreCaptain Alfred Dreyfus was wrongly convicted of passing military secrets to the Germans in 1894. His innocence was gradually established, notably by Zola's letter J'accuse published in l'Aurore. The affair, exacerbated by the fact that Dreyfus was Jewish, crystallized the opposition between left- and right-wing parties. The nation was divided between dreyfusards, calling for justice and favouring reformist and socialist trends, and the anti-Semitic anti-dreyfusards.
